Thermal Oxidizer- Hand Packed

Description of Equipment: Thermal Oxidizer
Problem: Refractory failure due to thermal expansion and compressive cracking of refractory.
Solution: Install refractory product with very low thermal expansion at operating temperatures with stable back up materials. Thermbond Formula 8-BL was selected for this application.
Product Being Replaced: Fired refractory shapes
Products Applied: Thermbond Formula 8-BL
Method of Installation: Hand packing and ramming
Equipment Used: Paddle mixer, 5 gallon pails and ramming tool
Scope of Work: Remove old refractory, install brick piers, and ceramic fiber prior to casting Thermbond. Shovel Thermbond into 5 gal. pails and “high lift” to unit for hand packing and ramming. Mixing time per 2 unit batch < 1 minute. Working time to place and ram each batch >10 minutes. Material set up completely in approximately 45 minutes.
Installation Date: October 2005
Follow Up: Unit has been in operation with no refractory problems. Contractor will be making periodic inspections as appropriate.
