ööö APPLICATION REPORTööö

Crude Heater Lining

Industry: Refining and Petrochemical

Description of Equipment: Crude heater

Problem: Original refractory was severely eroded from flame impingement and abrasion. The customer required a hot-face refractory that could perform well in the harsh environment and be fired-in rapidly without a long dry-out schedule.

Solution: The solution was to use Thermbond Formula 6-BL as the center wall and radius curve to control the flame pattern. Thermbond Formula 6-AG was gunned onto the ends of the Crude Heater to complete the protective lining.

Curved Steel forms in crude heater

Forms with external vibrators attached

Product Being Replaced: Conventional water-based, dense castable

Savings Using Thermbond Start-up was accomplished without any issues and the heater was brought up to full operating capacity without a prolonged dry-out period. : Thermbond’s rapid cure capability allowed the unit to be brought back online 2-3 days earlier than expected.

Products Applied: Thermbond Formula 6-BL and Thermbond Formula 6-AG

Method of Installation: Cast in place using steel forms and gunning

Equipment Used: Large horizontal paddle mixer, Reed machine, and Stellar Gunning Nozzle

Scope of Work: The contractor removed the old refractory and anchoring system, made steel repairs and prepared the crude heater for installation. New steel forms were placed into the heater and the center wall and radius curve was cast in sections. Thermbond was cast per a new design that changed and controlled the flame inside the heater. Both ends of the heater were then gunned to the required thickness.

Follow Up: Subsequent inspections of the outside show no hot-spots developing. Inspections of the inside and the refractory with direct flame impingement show no problem areas.

Testimonial from a customer in the Aluminum industry:

“Thermbond’s Formula 2104-L was installed as a repair to the most severe wear furnace hearth. Formula 2104-L has provided ‘amazing’ ability to withstand the abrasion and mechanical abuse that no other refractory as been able to provide. “
