Thermbond Technical Presentation to Major Oil Refiner
In June, a major oil refiner invited Stellar Materials to participate in their annual Fixed Equipment Advisory Group meeting to address refractory reliability concerns in pressure vessels and heaters. Stellar’s Jens Decker, VP Engineering and Jamie Cambetta, Sales Manager Gulf Coast Region presented the technical advantages of liquid phosphate bonded refractory materials in refinery applications.
“We received positive feedback from those who attended our session and we are grateful for the opportunity to share this valuable knowledge with others,” said Ted Hagberg, Director of Business Development.

Testimonial from a Maintenance Manager in the Aluminum Industry:
We have been using the Thermbond products for several years. Since we do most of the work in house we find the product easy to use because everything is premeasured. We are very satisfied with the performance of the material and like the fact that it can be heated up quickly because down time is very expensive. Over all it is a great product when we need to get back up quickly.

APPLICATION REPORT
Industry: Power
Description of Equipment: B&W coal fired cyclone burner
Problem: The conventional refractory currently used undergoes heavy slag build-up and shows signs of corrosion and cracking during operation of cyclone burners. Additionally, the installation process requires a prolonged dry-out schedule. The customer is looking for a refractory material that eliminates these problems.
Solution: The customer was intrigued with the unique features of Thermbond and selected Formula 4-R, a hand-pack and ramming material, for a trial. Thermbond Formula 4-R would be judged on installation ease, cracking, and slag build-up in a thin wall system against tubes and around the unique anchoring system found in the cyclone.
Product Being Replaced: Conventional air setting ramming material
Products Applied: Thermbond Formula 4-R
Method of Installation: Hand-packing and ramming
Equipment Used: Hand mixer and pneumatic rammer
Scope of Work: All existing refractory was removed from the cyclone walls. Broken anchors were replaced and minor steel work was performed. Thermbond Formula 4-R was mixed at the work-site, hand-packed and rammed into the anchor/tube assembly. All installation work was completed on time, allowing for faster start up and reducing the outage time.
Installation Date: Dec. 16, 2010
Follow Up: An inspection of the cyclone was completed a few months after installation. A needle gun was used to remove slag and expose the Thermbond Formula 4-R. No corrosion or cracking was found in the Thermbond product. Formula 4-R was performing extremely well. The customer is interested in installing additional material on the next cyclone repair.

Testimonial from a Customer in the Aluminum Industry:
"Thermbond’s use at this facility has grown over the past 10 years. We first used Thermbond for small emergency repairs and now used it for full maintenance applications. This plant is part of a large automotive production system. We must perform our melting equipment maintenance in a single 10 - 14 day shut down period annually. The repairs must last at least to the following year’s outage. This is critical. Thermbond has given us the confidence that it will perform where others have failed in the past."

Maintenance Manager in the Power Industry
We had a local contractor gunite Thermbond Formula 6-AG for 2 years now to do all of our burner throat repairs as well as new refractory throats. Thermbond Formula 6-AG holds up better than any other refractory to our knowledge because of its bonding capabilities and the ability to start the unit up rapidly.
