FCCU Flue Gas Slide Valve
Industry: Refining
Description of Equipment: FCCU Flue Gas Slide Valve
Problem: Unscheduled FCCU outage caused by a failure in the flue gas slide valve. Mechanical repairs to the slide valve required refractory replacement, and time was critical due to unit production loss. Conventional refractory would require a two to three day delay in getting the slide valve returned to the refinery due to the extensive thermal dry out required.
Solution: Client specified Thermbond refractory to eliminate the need for any heat cure (thermal dry out) after installation. Each day provided a significant value to the refinery in production and profitability.

Product Being Replaced: Well-known conventional high density vibcast refractory
Savings Using Thermbond: Estimated at 3 days
Products Applied: Thermbond Formula 6-AL
Method of Installation: Casting with external vibration
Equipment Used: Paddle mixer, external vibrators, trowels
Scope of Work: Replace refractory by casting Formula 6-AL through top opening of the slide valve. After setting, slide valve was flipped and the bottom section was cast with Thermbond as well.
Installation Date: August 28 – 30, 2011
Follow Up: Inspection during next planned shutdown. Currently scheduled in 5 years.

Stellar Materials is proud to announce that Petrobras, Brazil’s national oil company, has approved Thermbond refractory materials for use in their refineries. Their recent September 2011 release of Refractory Classification Table N-1728 lists Thermbond Formula 12-L, Formula 6-AG, Formula 6-L, Formula 18-BL, and Thermbrake 403G as approved materials. Petrobras’ acceptance of these materials is based on years of proven field experience and laboratory testing at multiple Petrobras refineries. Stellar Materials worked closely with our exclusive Brazilian Strategic Partner, Superflow Engenharia, to identify target applications in FCCU’s, thermal oxidizers, heaters, and boilers, and we look forward to building upon this success.
