    New Thermbond Formula 26-L

Stellar Materials Incorporated is pleased to announce the development of Thermbond Formula 26-L.

Formula 26-L is a silicon carbide based castable material. The product is primarily used in the waste incineration and power industry where high thermal conductivity is required for effective heat transfer. We recommend the use of this product for boiler applications or where silicon carbide (SiC) refractory is specified.

This product is similar to Thermbond Formula 26-P, the difference being the placement characteristics. Formula 26-P is a fine grain SiC material ideally suited for patch repairs, and Formula 26-L is a SiC castable version for original and full thickness linings.

This product is currently available for installations requiring high thermal conductivity. If you are interested in using Thermbond Formula 26-L, please contact your local sales representative or Sales Director for Europe and The Middle East, Marcel Grootveld at, marcel.grootveld@thermbond.com

The technical data sheet for Formula 26-L is now available on our website.

Testimonial from a plant manager at a primary aluminum melter:

"We have been utilizing Thermbond Refractories in our furnaces for over 3 years now with great success. The Formula 4-L is used below the metal line in critical areas such as the hearth. The Formula 5-L is used above the metal line and the Formula 3-L is used in the furnace roof. Thermbond has saved us in the scope of repair work due to its unique bonding to existing refractory and in down time due to Thermbonds rapid heat up capabilities."

Testimonial from a production manager in the aluminum industry:

"On the service side of things, they have proven themselves to be extremely reliable. With their Thermbond products the time necessary for curing the installation is minimal and this allows for quick turnaround of the furnace."

    New Thermbond Formula 6-EK

Stellar Materials Incorporated is pleased to introduce, Thermbond Formula 6-EK.

Formula 6-EK is a mullite based material, initially developed to improve surface imperfections when casting difficult and complex shapes.  The “K” suffix, which is new to the Thermbond product line represents improved flowing characteristics.  Surface imperfections in Thermbond products can be created due to the exothermic reaction not allowing air bubbles to completely dissipate from the mold surfaces during vibration. Formula 6-EK provides a much improved “flow” characteristic which enables the material to flow better in large complex pours and better release these bubbles.  There is also an added benefit for installations during hot ambient conditions because the Formula 6-EK provides a longer working time versus the traditional Formula 6-L material.

Formula 6-EK is primarily used in the Petrochemical and Refining Industry for transfer line exchanger (TLE and TLX) cone applications. It can be used in any application where a Formula 6 series material is being considered and product flow characteristics and extended working times are needed.

Similar to the rest of the Formula 6 series family, this mullite based material exhibits excellent thermal shock and CO resistance, and eliminates the need for an extended thermal dryout during unit start up.

If you are interested in using Thermbond Formula 6-EK, please contact your local sales representative or HPI Industry Specialist, Ted Hagberg at, ted.hagberg@thermbond.com

The technical data sheet for Formula 6-EK is now available on our website.

Testimonial from a Customer in the Petrochemical Industry, in the Texas:

"We have successfully installed Thermbond products in many areas of our Ethylene furnaces since 2001.We are very pleased with its unique benefits, including cure out, which we usually base on a standard heat-up procedure,we have used a variety of Thermbond materials with the ability to withstand thermal cycling better than previous used convectional refractory."

    Application Report

Round Top Melting Furnace Bellyband Replacement

    Industry: Aluminum

Description of Equipment: 20 foot diameter round top melting furnace.

Problem: Refractory bellyband was worn out due to chemical and mechanical attack.

Solution: Replace the bellyband with Thermbond Formula 2104-L cast refractory material.

    Product Being Replaced: Conventional refractory.

Savings Using Thermbond: Improved protection against chemical and mechanical attack at the bellyband.

    Products Applied: Thermbond Formula 2104-L

    Method of Installation: Casting

Equipment Used: Horizontal paddle mixer, pneumatic pencil vibrator, pneumatic activator pump

Scope of WorkComplete rebuild of Furnace, a 20’ diameter round top melting furnace. Thermbond Formula 2104-L installed in bellyband section, measuring 18” high x 11” thick around the complete diameter of the furnace with the exception of the charge ramp area.  The 2104-L bellyband is backed up by 7” of conventional castable refractory. The installation required 192 units of Thermbond Formula 2104-L material packaged in 12 – 16 unit super sacks. Installation performed by in house maintenance personnel with support from the Stellar Materials installation support team.

    Installation Date:  Jan 8, 2010

Follow Up: Material performance will be monitored every quarter.
