Testimonial from a Maintenance Manager in the Aluminum Industry:

We have been using the Thermbond products for several years. Since we do most of the work in house we find the product easy to use because everything is premeasured. We are very satisfied with the performance of the material and like the fact that it can be heated up quickly because down time is very expensive. Over all it is a great product when we need to get back up quickly.

Product Name Change: Formula 2104-A is now Formula 2104-AL

Effective August 1 2009, Stellar is changing the product name for Thermbond Formula 2104-A to Formula 2104-AL. This change was made to better classify the product based on its properties. Thermbond product suffixes, when used, are consistent throughout the product line and designed to convey certain characteristics of the products. Thermbond Formula 2104-A has longer working and setting times and has superior abrasion resistance properties, therefore it falls under the "L" category as well as the “A” category.

Below is a listing of the suffixes currently in use and their meaning:

 “A”

Higher Abrasion Resistance

 “B”

Contains poly fibers to facilitate even faster initial firing

 “E”

Extended working and setting times specially suitable for pumping applications

(even longer than “L” mixes)

 “F”

Finer grain sizing

 “G”

May be applied by gunning

 “J”

More flowable consistency

 “L”

Longer working and setting times

 “P”

Patch and repair mix may be applied by troweling, hand packing, or casting

 “Q”

Super Quick Setting

 “W”

Designed to be applied in thin sections as a washcoat

Maintenance Manager in the Power Industry

We had a local contractor gunite Thermbond Formula 6-AG for 2 years now to do all of our burner throat repairs as well as new refractory throats. Thermbond Formula 6-AG holds up better than any other refractory to our knowledge because of its bonding capabilities and the ability to start the unit up rapidly.

It’s Official: Autumn Workshop Dates: 7-11 October 2009

We are pleased to announce the dates for our Autumn Workshop will be Wednesday October 7th through Sunday October 11th at our manufacturing facility in Whitmore Lake, Michigan.

In 2007 and 2008, Stellar Materials presented two very successful Thermbond Workshops. Topics covered included:

  • Refractories 201 and 301 (advanced technical sessions), presented by Jens Decker, VP Engineering
  • Thermbond advantages in HPI, Aluminium, Waste Incineration and Boilers, presented by Thermbond industry specialists
  • Thermbond installation and equipment
  • Thermbond manufacturing, production and quality control

The workshops are held at our Michigan manufacturing facility and also include a plant tour and a gunning demonstration. Everyone had a great time and learned valuable information about Thermbond at our last workshops.

Content has been updated for our 2009 workshop to include information about our newest products, so even those who attended a previous workshop will benefit from the new material as well as gain a refresher on the fundamentals.

This is an excellent opportunity to share knowledge and interact with the Stellar team and customers, contractors and distributors from around the world.

Invitations will be emailed later this month. Space is limited. If you are interested in attending, please email me right away at ashley@thermbond.com to ensure you receive a personal invitation with all the workshop details.

I hope to see you at the Workshop!

Ashley Garcia, Marketing Coordinator

Brendan Gallagher, Sales Director, Power Industry

Congratulations!

Brendan Gallagher
Sales Director
Power Industry

Stellar Materials Incorporated is pleased to announce the promotion of Brendan Gallagher to Sales Director for the Power Industry.

Brendan came to work for Stellar Materials in 2004. Prior to his employment with Stellar, he worked for John Zink for five years selling Thermbond Refractories.

Over the last five years as the Sales Director for the Southwest Region, Brendan gained an extensive knowledge of the Power Industry. In his new position he will dedicate time and resources to increase Stellar's presence in this industry.

“I am very excited about the new responsibilities and challenges in dealing with the Power Industry,” says Brendan. “It offers us tremendous opportunity to grow the use of Thermbond in this market segment. I look forward to working with everyone in making this another successful industry where Thermbond is Stellar!”

In addition to his new role, Brendan will maintain his direct sales responsibilities for the Southwest Region.

Vice President of Worldwide Sales Tom Atkins says, "I am excited about the opportunities for Stellar Materials in the Power Industry. There are numerous applications where Thermbond delivers value. I look forward to Brendan leading our company’s development of this market."

Testimonial from a Customer in the Aluminum Industry:

"Thermbond’s use at this facility has grown over the past 10 years. We first used Thermbond for small emergency repairs and now used it for full maintenance applications. This plant is part of a large automotive production system. We must perform our melting equipment maintenance in a single 10 - 14 day shut down period annually. The repairs must last at least to the following year’s outage. This is critical. Thermbond has given us the confidence that it will perform where others have failed in the past."

Gail Napoli, Customer Service Manager

Stellar Spotlight: Gail Napoli,

Customer Service Manager

This month’s spotlight shines on Stellar Materials’ Customer Service Manager, Gail Napoli. Gail began her career with Stellar in 2004. Prior to her employment here, Gail was the Credit and Collections Manager for a printing company called Diamond Roller.

As Customer Service Manager, it is Gail's job to guarantee customer satisfaction. This includes reviewing all orders, ensuring they are entered accurately and in a timely fashion, coordinating the manufacturing and shipping of the product with the plant or warehouse, making sure the product reaches its destination on time, and invoicing and following up with the customer.

She is responsible for overseeing all orders, purchasing and monitoring raw materials, and managing credit and collections. She reports directly to Neil Mintz, Chief Operating Officer of Stellar Materials.

Gail’s amicable nature helps her to build strong relationships with customers, suppliers and co-workers. Gail keeps all of our customers smiling.

“I am proud to be associated with a company that I watched grow by leaps and bounds in the last five years as a result of their compassion and integrity. I am proud to work for such a ’Stellar’ company.” says Gail Napoli.

Gail is also very proud of her son, Justin who recently joined the CHS group in Kuwait as a paramedic to give medical aid to our troops.

In addition to taking care of our customers, Gail has three grandchildren, all under the age of five, whom she loves to spoil!

Stay tuned for next month’s Stellar spotlight!

Application Report

 Boiler Repair in Australia

Industry: Power

Company: Major Power Station

Application: Unit 2 Boiler, Penthouse Refractory Repair

Product Applied: Thermbond Formula Castable

Method of installation: Vibration

Equipment Used: Paddle mixer, vibrator, concrete finishing tools

Problem: The refractory in the B2 Penthouse around the tube penetrations was in poor condition and needed repair to minimize the ingress of fly ash and hence reduce the clean out time for the Penthouse in future outages.

Solution: Used mullite based Thermbond Formula Castable to provide a solution to the current damaged conventional refractory that surrounded 137 tubes, 48mm in diameter. Contractor applied Thermbond to areas of existing damaged conventional refractory, creating a permanent repair that rapidly cured and dried within hours so unit could go back into service.

Product replaced: Conventional refractory

Safety Advantage: The permanent Thermbond repair to existing fired refractory will reduce the potential for burns to cleaning operators. The dust can flow through cracked conventional refractory and burn personnel as the plant has experienced in the past.

Scope of Work: An industrial vacuum cleaned out fly ash and any loose existing refractory material. A 2mm thermal insulating paper was glued around the steel tube penetrations to allow for some expansion and contraction during temperature fluctuations. The repair averaged 60mm in depth and some exposed anchors were evident. Whenever possible insulation blanket was laid down and the Thermbond refractory cast and vibrated into place.

Plant Engineer’s comment after the installation: “The Thermbond repair work is complete, the refractory went in quite well and there were no problems at all. All the damaged refractory was removed down to the super wool layer. The super wool was replaced and ceramic paper was wrapped around the tubes. The contractor was very professional in their work. If the product performs well in these conditions, I will look at doing the rest of the penetration repairs with Thermbond.”

Special thanks to John Pulbrook, Sales Manager, Refractech Pty. Ltd. for this application report. John and Refractech have been a successful Stellar Materials International Strategic Partner for over ten years.
