Stellar Materials Announces New Product Formula 6 AL
Stellar Materials Incorporated, manufacturers of Thermbond® Refractories developed a new Formula product for applications in the Chemical and Minerals processing industries Vice President of Engineering, Jens Decker explains the reasons why this product was developed, and presents a couple of applications for its use.
"This product was developed for larger furnaces that require high abrasion resistance. Formula 6-A is abrasion resistant, however due to its fast setting properties, it cannot be placed in large furnaces or used in large quantities at high ambient temperatures. Formula 6-AL is abrasion resistant and has a longer working time, which is ideal for applications like rotary furnaces. Formula 6 AL is mainly for all applications where thermal shock and abrasion is involved. If you require higher abrasion resistance than Formula 6-L or Formula 6-B can offer, then Formula 6-AL is recommended. For instance Formula 6-AL will work well in rotary and calcining furnaces”, explains Jens Decker.
Vice President of World Wide Sales, Tom Atkins comments, "Formula 6-AL has great potential in the mineral processing industry, as well as the power industry and the steel industry, where very high abrasion conditions exist. A secondary benefit of using Formula 6-AL in ultra high abrasion applications is that, like all Thermbond products, it has excellent thermal shock properties."
As with all the Thermbond products, standard pre-testing has been done. An independent lab test was used to validate the high abrasion resistance. The results were very good, with less than 12 cc loss.

Testimonial from a production manager in the aluminum industry:
"On the service side of things, they have proven themselves to be extremely reliable. With their Thermbond products the time necessary for curing the installation is minimal and this allows for quick turnaround of the furnace."

Testimonial from a customer in the petrochem industry:
"I have used Thermbond successfully in TLE's and different applications where conventional refractories were failing. Thermbond has performed as promised, and I will continue to use Thermbond in the future."

Application Report Industry: Power Generation Description of Equipment: Peep doors, thermocouple ports, and water cannon ports Problem: Repairs needed to be made with minimal downtime Solution: Use Thermbond products that require no curing or lengthy dryout

Product Being Replaced: Conventional Ram Refractory
Products Applied: Formula 6 P and Formula 15 R
Method of Installation: Equipment Used: Pnemautic ramming hammer and 3/4 hp drill with mixing blade.
Scope of Work: Mixed Formula 15R with hand mixer. Rammed material into place over existing refractory. Installer was pleased with the consistency. Initially Formula 6P was mixed into a thin trowelling consistency. The trowelling cosistency worked well for thin overlays. Additional batches were mixed so the Formula 6P could be made into a ball (like for ramming). The material was spread out on plywood to slow down the setting time. Unused material was moved and stored in an area where the temperature was 65F, as opposed to keeping the material in the boiler where temperatures were 95-100F, as they had done prior. This extended the working time for Formula 6P pleased the installers.
Installation Date: October 2007
